what is remote deposit capture?

Remote Deposit Capture (RDC) lets you scan and digitally deposit checks anytime and from anywhere - allowing people to do much of their banking remotely. You've likely seen it on your banking app, usually titled "Mobile Deposit." 

How does it work?

Depending on how large the check amount is and what your bank’s specific rules are, you may be able to use a fax machine, smartphone, or a standard computer scanner to capture images of the check for submission to the bank. For higher volume transactions, a specialized scanner may be required or not permitted at all. The process (usually) is:


  1. Scan or take a photo of the front and back of your check (an endorsement is usually required – see your bank’s Terms and Conditions for info).

  2. Input the check’s value if the system does not automatically register it from the scan.

  3. Submit the images and check information to the bank’s specified mobile app, website, etc.

  4. Hold on to your physical check for your files but mark it in some way to avoid double-depositing. Some checks feature a box you can X-out to denote a mobile deposit.

how long does it take?

Typically, the processing time is minimal (1-2 days) and most banks will allow you to submit checks late into the evening so you’re not rushing at the end of the day.

How do I begin using remote deposit?

Most major banks these days offer some form of RDC and no fee or registration is required to begin using it. Check their website or explore their mobile app and you’ll likely find it’s already available. You can also call the bank directly for more info.
